I've just been reading about 'yuri' in the Wikipedia entry on the yuri genre. Wow! It seems there's quite a history to the word, which literally means 'lily' and is a relatively common Japanese female name.

It seems intuitive to divine that both 'yuri' (and it's male counterpart 'yaoi' - love between boys) refers to not only the lustful, sexual relationships between girls or women but including - and with more emphasis on - the romantic and emotional connections. In common usage though, yuri covers it all, and includes the physical, sexual aspect.
